FoC 125: Postpartum Truths for the Whole Person with Allison Auth

There are oodles of resources for pregnancy and caring for babies but caring for ourselves post partum–or even knowing what to expect post partum!–is another story. Hormonal changes plus sleep deprivation, stress, and feelings of isolation would make anyone feel overwhelmed but we often beat ourselves up over our emotions and struggles post partum rather than offering grace and taking care of our physical and mental health. Thankfully, today’s guest, Allison Auth just released on this often very challenging season for mothers.

Allison is a writer and blogger living in Denver. After graduating from Franciscan University of Steubenville, she worked in youth ministry and marriage preparation until dedicating herself to the homeschooling of her children. Having gone through four postpartum experiences, she is passionate about sharing her knowledge and bringing hope to those struggling in their vocation to motherhood.

In this episode we dive into the difficulties of the post partum season including post partum depression or the milder (but still exhausting) post partum depletion many women experience after giving birth. We discuss what makes post partum particularly difficult in our isolated and individualistic culture (paired with an American go get ’em attitude that does not allow for the rest and recovery that women really need). Allison has great wisdom to share about how women can care for their physical, mental, and spiritual health so enjoy the conversation!

And another great reason to become a patron of the podcast is access to our Lent book club. We’re reading Holy Women.

In this beautiful book Pope Benedict explores the lives and importance of 17 women saints of the Church, in short, readable, and compelling essays. We’ll read and discuss two to three women each week and learn more about saints we love, and come to know incredible women we’ve never heard of before.

As patrons of the podcast you’ll receive weekly reflections and thoughtful study questions and we’ll discuss them together in the Slack! (About 150 patrons participated in our Advent book club so we’re excited to coordinate another one for Lent.) Become a patron today!

FoC 124: Waking Up From Disordered Attachments with Seth Haines

The psychology of addiction is fascinating. What makes us reach for the things that we’re addicted to? Maybe we’re not addicted to heroin but do we have disordered attachments? When pain hits us as stress or emotional trauma do we reach for that glass of wine, binge a show on Netflix, or refresh those social media apps to see if one more like is there? What are the spiritual implications to numbing our pain with the things that can’t heal our pain?

In this episode we’re talking with Seth Haines about his newest release, The Book of Waking Up. Seth is a husband, dad, lawyer, and writer. Like many of us, he’s no stranger to addiction and he shares about his own story in this new book. He also dives into the why behind our addictions and how we are so prone to have disordered attachments even to good things that are gifts from God!

In this episode we discuss attachments and their failure to satisfy the human heart that is wired for Divine Love. Seth shares about how the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola can help us be honest with ourselves and examine our attachments. And we talk about how Mary is the model for a human being truly alive to life–it’s pain and it’s joys. It’s a great conversation so grab a cup of coffee (maybe? do you have a disordered attachment to caffeine like us?) and listen in!

FoC 123: Bringing Beauty to the World Through the Beauty of Home with Carrie Gress and Noelle Mering

What’s the value of a space of beauty to nurture family life? How does beauty affect our souls? What makes a space beautiful? Is there theology to anchor our home lives in?

These are the kinds of questions we’re touching on in today’s episode with writers, philosophers, and mothers, Carrie Gress and Noelle Mering–two of the authors behind the new design book The Theology of Home: Finding the Eternal in the Everyday. While this book is fit for your coffee table, it’s more than the beautiful photographs that fill it. It addresses the spiritual foundation for loving your family by cultivating home.

In this episode we discuss homemaking in a culture that doesn’t value such efforts and the hunger for home in our society, made obvious by the obsession with home improvement and design shows (or Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia empire). We talk about how loving our homes isn’t only for interior designers or for the wealthy and how making space for hospitality can make our homes a light to the world. It’s a great conversation so grab a cup of coffee and listen in!

FoC 121: The Real Live Deep Dive on Anne of Green Gables

Welcome to our FIRST EVER live recording of the podcast!

That’s right, Haley and Christy–usually separated by a few thousand miles–were together in the flesh at the FoC Raspberry Cordial Catholic Literary Gathering and we recorded with an audience with dear friend and fellow Anne-phile, Meg Hunter-Kilmer.

For those of you who couldn’t be there with us in early November, we wanted to let you in on some of the fun! The three of us have a great time answering questions from the audience about L.M. Montgomery’s beautiful books including what makes someone a kindred spirit, whether Diana will have a mid-life crisis, if we’d be friends with Philippa Gordon or Jane Andrews in real life, and so much more!

FoC 119: The Latin Mass: Answering All the Questions You Were Too Afraid to Ask with Zac Mabry

When we watched The Little Rascals when it came out in 1994, little did we know that Porky would end up being a Catholic convert–and a Latin Mass goer. That’s right! Zac Mabry, child actor turned CPA, is on the podcast today!

Zac is a fellow podcaster (he makes The Roman Circus Podcast with Matt Baker) and a contributing editor to The Catholic Herald. He’s also a Texan like Haley and he’s here to answer all your burning questions about the Latin Mass.

In this episode we clarify some of the confusing terms used to refer to different liturgies, explain why the Latin Mass is so great, and give tips for folks who are interested in attending a Latin Mass but nervous to try it out. We talk about everything from veiling to how traditional Catholics aren’t like the trads you might meet on Twitter. This episode is a little controversial and a lot of fun. FoC 118: When Crisis Hits Can Faith and Family Survive? with Kathryn Whitaker

[powepress]

Haley may live in Texas but her Texas cred can’t hold a candle to today’s guest’s! Kathryn Whitaker, a graphic designer, voice behind the popular blog Team Whitaker, speaker, author, and VERY Texan mama is here to talk about the life experiences that inspired her new book, Live Big, Love Bigger: Getting Real with BBQ, Sweet Tea, and a Whole Lotta Jesus.

When Kathryn’s son, Luke, was born premature her world was rocked by a medical crisis unlike anything she’d faced before. Her family came out the other side transformed. In this episode we talked about how to be a good friend when a family you know is in crisis mode, the most important things to do when your own family is in a crisis, and ways to cope to survive these seasons when they inevitably arrive in our lives.

We usually recommend brewing some tea, but with Kathryn as our guest, we will simply have to suggest grabbing a Dr. Pepper!

FoC 117: Brain Tumors, Prayer, and Being A Catholic Celebrity Whether You Like It Or Not with Jeannie Gaffigan

Today’s guest is none other than the producer, writer, and director, Jeannie Gaffigan! Jeannie is raising five children in New York City with her comedian husband, Jim. As if all of that wasn’t keeping her busy enough, in 2017 she was hit with the unexpected news that she had a life-threatening brain tumor and faced a dangerous surgery followed by a long recovery. Since then she has penned what must be the funniest book about brain tumors ever written: When Life Gives You Pears, a memoir that touches not just on the medical crisis that almost took her life but also on her faith, the support of her family, and the lessons she brought with her to the other side.

In this episode Jeannie shares with us about her Catholic faith, the power of prayer, how lessons about what really matters keep having to be learned over and over, the journey of being a recovering control freak, and what it’s like to be in the spotlight as a famous family who is Catholic (but never signed up to be your token Catholic celebrity!) When Life Gives You Pears was released just today, October 1st, and we both loved it. It’s a beautiful and vulnerable tribute to a faith that believes in miracles and you will laugh at every page until you start crying because it’s so moving. So grab a cup of tea and listen to Jeannie’s amazing story!

Today’s episode was brought to you by Rose Harrington, a home to botanical rosary art by Katrina Harrington. Her art is inspired by the tradition of Mary Gardens as well as paper, canvas and ceramic hand lettered goods, all made in the USA.

In addition to the beautiful botanical prints, the shop features ceramic mugs made in Ohio with Katrina’s designs of the Morning Offering prayer, Offer It Up hand lettering, and a blue and white floral Fiat which lend you perfect reminders to pray the Morning Offering first thing in the morning with your morning cuppa, to groggily offer up whatever is making you reach for the caffeine or to pray, “Let it be done,” as Our Lady did.

During the medieval Age of Faith, rural Christians bestowed names upon flowers and plants to symbolically represent Mary, the Mother of God, as well as the life of Christ, the saints and the liturgical year. Katrina turned to these traditions to paint a botanical rosary – 20 flowers representing each of the mysteries of the rosary.  And they are gorgeous! Haley has Katrina’s botanical take on the Sorrowful Mysteries hanging up in her living room!
