FoC 126: Why Catholics Need to Care About Racism with Gloria Purvis

In today’s episode we are diving in to an important topic that makes a lot of people uncomfortable to talk about: racism. Racism is not merely a political talking point, it’s an evil condemned by the Church. Our political narrative would have you believe that fighting abortion is for the right and fighting racism is for the left, but our Catholic faith begs to differ. Today we’re benefiting from the wisdom of Gloria Purvis about the experience of black Catholics, racism in modern America (yes, even from Catholics), and how we as Catholics should respond to racism.

Gloria Purvis is a Catholic convert (she shares the story in the episode and it is a GOOD one), a Cornell University grad, the creator of EWTN series Authentically Free at Last, and the host of the radio show Morning Glory. She’s also served on the National Black Catholic Congress’ Leadership Commission on Social Justice and was an Advisory Board Member on the Maryland Catholic Conference’s Respect for Life Department. We’ve been following her on Twitter for years and we’re so thrilled to get a chance to talk to her on the podcast.

In this episode we dive into the problem with making an idol out of your political party, the importance of Black Lives Matter, and the presence of racism in the Catholic world both on and off line. We talk about the need for Catholics to actively oppose racism and to ask the Holy Spirit to help us root out the sin of racism in our own hearts. Gloria is so engaging, wise, and inspiring. It’s a great conversation!

FoC 125: Postpartum Truths for the Whole Person with Allison Auth

There are oodles of resources for pregnancy and caring for babies but caring for ourselves post partum–or even knowing what to expect post partum!–is another story. Hormonal changes plus sleep deprivation, stress, and feelings of isolation would make anyone feel overwhelmed but we often beat ourselves up over our emotions and struggles post partum rather than offering grace and taking care of our physical and mental health. Thankfully, today’s guest, Allison Auth just released on this often very challenging season for mothers.

Allison is a writer and blogger living in Denver. After graduating from Franciscan University of Steubenville, she worked in youth ministry and marriage preparation until dedicating herself to the homeschooling of her children. Having gone through four postpartum experiences, she is passionate about sharing her knowledge and bringing hope to those struggling in their vocation to motherhood.

In this episode we dive into the difficulties of the post partum season including post partum depression or the milder (but still exhausting) post partum depletion many women experience after giving birth. We discuss what makes post partum particularly difficult in our isolated and individualistic culture (paired with an American go get ’em attitude that does not allow for the rest and recovery that women really need). Allison has great wisdom to share about how women can care for their physical, mental, and spiritual health so enjoy the conversation!
