FoC 147: Men and Women CAN be Friends According to C.S. Lewis and Dorothy Sayers with Gina Dalfonzo

We’re chatting with Gina Dalfonzo today about the friendship between two of our favorite literary figures, Dorothy L. Sayers and C.S. Lewis. Because Sayers wasn’t officially part of the Inklings–the literary group of friends that included Lewis, Tolkien, and Charles Williams–her friendship with Lewis isn’t as celebrated as it should be. But their mutual respect, loyal friendship, and encouragement developed into the fascinating friendship explored in Gina Dalfonzo’s new book Dorothy and Jack.

In addition to Dorothy and Jack, Gina is the author of One by One: Welcoming the Singles in Your Church, and the editor of The Gospel in Dickens. She is also a columnist at Christ & Pop Culture, and founder and editor of Dickensblog. Her writing has been published in The Atlantic, Christianity Today, First Things, The Weekly Standard, Guideposts, The Englewood Review of Books, and Sehnsucht: The C.S. Lewis Journal, among others.

In this episode, we talk about how Sayers helped Lewis, who had very few close female relationship in his life, develop his view towards women and prepare him for his marriage with Joy Davidman. We discuss the importance of friendship in the Christian life and this wonderful example of a dear and beloved friendship between a man and a woman completely lacking a romantic element. Christy shares her Tolkien hot takes and we have a blast exploring these colorful literary figures.

Enjoy a seasonal beverage and this great conversation!

FoC 145: Intentional Living in Times of Chaos with Tsh Oxenreider

How do we order our lives? How do we find order when living in tumultuous times? Is that even possible? Today we’re chatting with the lovely Tsh Oxenreider about what it means to live intentionally in 2020.

Tsh lives with her husband Kyle and three kids in central Texas. Her blog and her first podcast were followed religiously by both of us in the early days of blogging and podcasting. Since then she continues to amaze us. Tsh is constantly creating, reflecting, and growing. She’s now a bestselling author with several books to her name and her current podcasting endeavor is The Good List (a must listen!) Her newest book is Shadow and Light: A Journey into Advent.

In this episode we talk about the concept of crafting a rule of life. Inspired by the ancient Rule of St. Benedict, creating your own rule of life helps you live with intention and prioritize what is truly important to you. It can prevent getting swept away into all the noise and demands that surround us! But what would a rule of life look like in chaotic and, dare we say, unprecedented 2020? We have thoughts on that, too!

It’s a great conversation so grab a cup of coffee and enjoy!

FoC 144: Why Black Catholic Culture Matters with Dr. Ansel Augustine

A few months ago we saw a powerful video about the legacy of faith of Black Catholics in New Orleans featuring Dr. Ansel Augustine. Ever since we’ve wanted a chance to interview Dr. Augustine and dive a little deeper in the rich history of Black Catholic faith and culture. This year has highlighted the injustice present in our society. What is the way forward for Catholics and for the Church? Today’s guest has so much wisdom to share.

Dr. Ansel Augustine is the Executive Director of Cultural Diversity and Outreach for the Archdiocese of Washington. He is the former Director of the Office of Black Catholic Ministries for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. He is also on the Faculty of the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University of Louisiana.  He began his career in ministry over 20 years ago when he became the youth minister at his home parish of St. Peter Claver in the Treme area of New Orleans, which he helped to rebuild following hurricane Katrina. Dr. Augustine has worked in prison ministry for over 25 years in various capacities. He is also a member of the Wild Tchoupitoulas (Black Masking) Mardi Gras Indians (and if you don’t know the history behind this, get ready! It’s fascinating).

In this episode we talk about how the Church (and especially Catholics of color) can find hope in the heroic faithfulness of Black Catholic saints and Catholic ancestors, the history of New Orleans that makes it such a Catholic city, and what the Church can do to serve, support, and include Catholics who have been pushed to the margins by society (and even other Catholics). Dr. Augustine also shares about the connections between indigenous people in Louisiana and enslaved people that were the origins of traditions still celebrated today–some amazing history that may be unfamiliar to folks outside of Louisiana.

It’s a great conversation so grab a cup of coffee (and since we’re talking about NOLA, maybe a beignet?) and enjoy!

FoC 143: We Change Your Mind About Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park with Joy Clarkson

Well, friends, we’ve been delighted by conversations with the lovely Sarah Clarkson and the lovely Sally Clarkson and today, at long last, we’re chatting with the youngest Clarkson gal, Joy Clarkson!

Joy is a PhD candidate in theology at St. Andrews University and we’re so glad that she finished writing her dissertation and is back on Twitter because she’s one of our all-time favorite follows. She is also the voice behind a beautiful podcast called Speaking with Joy.

When we heard that Joy had just read one of our favorite books, Mansfield Park, for the first time, we knew we had to have her on the podcast to share all of her thoughts! In this episode, we defend our girl, Fanny Price, from the haters. We also talk about the themes of charm and respectability vs. authentic virtue. And we judge Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram’s parenting. By the end of the episode, we hope that you will be inspired to read Mansfield Park for the first time or pick it up for a re-read if you’re already familiar!

FoC 142: Expanding the Catholic Literary Imagination with Sergio Bermudez

If you’ve been listening to the podcast for awhile, you know how much we love to talk about literature and the Catholic imagination. However, we find that we’re often coming back to the same handful of Catholic novelists and we wanted to talk to our friend Sergio Bermudez about expanding the Catholic literary canon and thinking about other writers who are influenced by the Catholic imagination.

Sergio is a proud uncle and writer from California who loves Latin American literature. In this episode we talk about how writers influenced by a sacramental worldview end up participating in the Catholic imagination even when they are no longer practicing Catholics, what Latin American magical realism and medieval literature have in common, and how storytelling can wrestle with faith and communicate something that’s ultimately hopeful. We also talk about fighting against the tendency to canonize our favorite writers instead of being willing to wrestle with their art.

We talk about a lot of writers and artists in this episode so grab a pencil so you can add to your reading list and enjoy the episode!

FoC 140: Diving Into Catholic Social Teaching with the Female Saints Part 2 with Karianna Frey

The Church has a wonderful gift to offer in her Catholic Social Teaching. We’re talking a little bit about how much we miss when we ignore CST and why we should care about it with the fabulous Karianna Frey in this episode.

Karianna is a mom, a classical educator, a speaker, and the author of Serviam Non Serviam: A Daily Examination of Conscience Journal. And lucky you because she’s sharing her gift of teaching to teach us all about the different themes of Catholic Social Teaching! In fact, we got so wrapped up in all the great thoughts and insights into these Church teachings that we had to make this episode a two-parter (this is part 2 so be sure to listen to part 1 first!)

We’re diving into what the different themes of Catholic Social Teaching are and what the Biblical basis for each is. Karianna also chose a different Catholic woman (saint or figure) that exemplifies each theme so we can understand each theme in action. You will learn so much (and likely get to know a few friends in heaven as she shares about these holy women.)

FoC 138: Encouragement for Educating Your Children with Grace and Love with Sally Clarkson

We’re back from our summer break and excited to kick off the new season of the podcast with none other than the fabulous Sally Clarkson!

If you don’t already know and love Sally, you will after you listen to this episode. Sally is the author of many bestselling books on parenting, Christian living, and education. She is a podcaster, speaker, wife, and mama to four grown children. One of her daughters has even joined us on the podcast before to talk about books!

Sally’s books and podcast have been sources of inspiration, encouragement, and wisdom to us in our parenting and homeschooling journeys, so it was an absolute treat to get to chat with her this week. (We tried our best not to fangirl the whole time but…well…you be the judge of whether we succeeded or not.)

We’ve both been homeschooling our crews for awhile, but we know that many of our dear listeners are unexpectedly being pushed into homeschooling for the first time (thanks, a lot, pandemic!). Whatever your schooling situation is this year, it’s probably highly irregular, and we ALL need some encouragement and vision right now. And Sally just released a new book, Awaking Wonder: Opening Your Child’s Heart to the Beauty of Learning, that is sure to be just what you need.

In this episode, Sally is sharing from her experience and wisdom about lighting the fire of curiosity, wonder, and love for learning in our children and her insights will apply whether you’re homeschooling, virtual schooling, or sending your kids to a brick and mortar this year. We talk about how so much of our children’s education isn’t merely academic. It’s all intertwined with parenting and cultivating our children’s little souls and equipping them with what they need. And when we do this well, the academic stuff flows naturally! We also chat a little bit about educating out-of-the-box kids (Sally and Haley have some of those and maybe you do, too!) and being the mentors and models that our children need to thrive during this crazy year.

We know that in this very difficult season, you will benefit so much from the grace that Sally has to offer in this episode! So grab a cup of tea and a scone (really, Sally would want you to!) and enjoy her wisdom.

FoC 137: A Film Adaptation We Actually Love: Greta Gerwig’s Little Women with Mary Rose Somarriba

We’ve kept you waiting for our deep dive attention to Greta Gerwig’s new adaptation of Little Women, but we think this episode is worth the wait!

Mary Rose Somarriba, writer, speaker, editor of Natural Womanhood, and associate editor of Verily Magazine, is with us today talking about the beauty of seeing a classic through fresh eyes.

We discuss why adapting a film isn’t the same as copy and pasting a book onto the screen, and how this film brings together Louisa May Alcott’s life and perspective with her masterpiece novel. We of course talk about the actors, their performances and casting, as well as the choices Gerwig made in bouncing back and forth through time. But you won’t want to miss our individual opinions about the ending and how each one of us came away with different opinions.

FoC 136: What Death Tells Us About Life with Dr. Scott Hahn

In today’s episode, we’re talking with Dr. Scott Hahn, renowned speaker, professor, and best selling author of many wonderful books including Rome Sweet Home and The Lamb’s Supper. Dr. Hahn is also the founder and director of the St. Paul Center and he has a new book out, co-authored by our friend and yours, Emily Stimpson Chapman, titled Hope to Die: The Christian Meaning of Death and the Resurrection of the Body.

We’re so excited to share this conversation with you because it’s all about living (okay, and dying) in the reality of our resurrected Lord. Dr. Hahn shares about releasing a book about death during a global pandemic, why our bodies are more than a shell for our souls, how our Christian beliefs affect how we treat bodies after death, and what burial rituals and funeral liturgy reveal. But, just as the title of his book claims, it’s a hopeful conversation full of the joy of the Resurrection! We are indeed an Easter people.
