Well, friends, we’ve been delighted by conversations with the lovely Sarah Clarkson and the lovely Sally Clarkson and today, at long last, we’re chatting with the youngest Clarkson gal, Joy Clarkson!
Joy is a PhD candidate in theology at St. Andrews University and we’re so glad that she finished writing her dissertation and is back on Twitter because she’s one of our all-time favorite follows. She is also the voice behind a beautiful podcast called Speaking with Joy.
When we heard that Joy had just read one of our favorite books, Mansfield Park, for the first time, we knew we had to have her on the podcast to share all of her thoughts! In this episode, we defend our girl, Fanny Price, from the haters. We also talk about the themes of charm and respectability vs. authentic virtue. And we judge Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram’s parenting. By the end of the episode, we hope that you will be inspired to read Mansfield Park for the first time or pick it up for a re-read if you’re already familiar!
So grab a cup of tea and enjoy!

Hi ladies, I agree about the modern Mansfield Park interpretations. But the 1983 English mini series is true to the book. You might be interested in a column I wrote about Mansfield Park and conduct novels.

I was going to make the same comment! I actually think Sylvestra Le Touvel in the 1983 BBC miniseries got Fanny’s character dead-on, and it’s HER portrayal that finally made me see Fanny as likable, but I did not READ her as likable the first time I read MP. My one fascination now is HOW did she get to be so virtuous, considering the home she came from and the home she goes to! She’s so neglected by everyone except Edmund and has no examples of virtue to imitate, except perhaps Edmund. The scenes returning her to Portsmouth are cringe-worthy for the portrayal of her real mother and sisters! Anyone — including Fanny — would prefer the company of Maria and Julia and Lady Bertram. It is a mystery, unless you simply believe she’s been supernaturally gifted by the Holy Spirit with great virtue. She certainly has counsel and fortitude!
