FoC 053: Finding Faith and Delight in The Awakening of Miss Prim

episode53

We’re back today with another great book club conversation! This week’s selection is The Awakening of Miss Prim by Natalia Sanmartin Fenollera. We both loved this story of a woman who finds herself in a small Spanish town and sees for the first time faith lived out in community, while falling in love with a mysterious, intriguing man.

Miss Prim assumes she is seeking refuge in small town, but really her eyes are opened to a new world she didn’t know she was searching for. This book has a delightful way of exploring such great themes of faith, distributism, the real meaning of feminism, education and formation of children, the benefits of living in community and personal conversion (and pastries, a lot of pastries).

We delve into all these topics and more in today’s book episode!

FoC 042: Hidden Grace and All The Light We Cannot See

ep42allthelight

For our latest book club selection we chose the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Anthony Doerr, All the Light We Cannot See.

It’s an amazing tale of World War II interweaving the lives of  a blind French girl and a brilliant German boy who grows up within the Nazi regime.

In circumstances of survival we see beauty, love, and grace shine through. We talk about redemption, sacrifice, standing up for one’s conscience, and the hidden workings of grace in our lives. We had a great time discussing this novel that really sinks into your soul and stays with you.

We thought it would be fun to choose a book we both had been wanting to read forever and have you read-along with us! Today we’ll be discussing Wendell Berry’s Hannah Coulter; a poignant telling of one woman’s life.

This is a book about love, not just that found in marriage, but the love of family, community, and the land. We found there was much to discuss from Berry’s work and we hope that you enjoy it whether you’ve read the book yet or not.

Don’t forget we’ll be in our Facebook group discussing this great story, come join us!

FoC 028: What Do Greek Myths and Victorian Poetry Have in Common?

episode28

We’re talking about them on our new book swap episode! Today we’ll be exploring Greek myths and Victorian poetry in our latest book swap selections Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis and Possession by A.S. Byatt.

We discuss the beautiful imagery of faith in C.S. Lewis’s masterwork, then toss around ideas of feminism, sexuality, marriage, and creativity with A.S. Byatt’s Possession. We hope this conversation makes you want to pick up these books if you haven’t read them yet, and if you have, we hope you’ll join in the discussion!

FoC 016: The Soul’s Journey of Faith in Gilead and In This House of Brede

episodesixteen

Today we’re swapping more of our favourite books and discussing them together. This time we picked two books the other hadn’t yet read that were focused on the life of faith: Gilead by Marilynne Robinson and In This House of Brede by Rumer Gooden. Both books are beautiful examples of authentic, living faith and were rewarding to read and talk about.

We also talked about these other novels written by these two great authors:

Home by Marilynne Robinson

Lila by Marilynne Robinson.

Five for Sorrow, Ten for Joy by Rumer Godden.

Kingfishers Catch Fire by Rumer Godden. (This is the title Christy completely forgot – but it’s actually a pretty unforgettable story!)

Have you read these books? Did they touch your heart as well? We’d love to hear what you thought of them or any of the other books written by these great writers!

FoC 008: Harriet Vane is Not A Floozie

episodeeight

When we found out we hadn’t read some of each other’s favourite books of all time, we decided to fix that by reading them at the same time and then talk about them on the podcast! Christy read one of Haley’s favourites, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
while Haley was told to read Gaudy Night
by Dorothy L. Sayers. These two books may seem to be completely different, except that they are both really fun to talk about!

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell is an intricate fantasy about magic in England at the beginning of the nineteenth century, while Gaudy Night is a detective novel set in Oxford during the 1930’s. We chat about feminism, marriage, and the intellectual life with Gaudy Night, then talk about magic, evil, and an alternate history of England with Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. This episode has a little of everything!

We also talk about how we find time to read, what works best for us, and how we find the books we read. We hope you’ll share your favourite reads with us too, and maybe inspire you to pick up a little fantasy or detective fiction!
