FoC 154: Intentional Fatherhood, Vocation, and Gilbert Blythe with Tyler Blanski

What makes Gilbert Blythe the ultimate literary husband and father? How can we treat our vocations with more intentionality and commitment? Why are there so many resources for Catholic moms and not Catholic dads? All this AND the world’s cutest love story coming your way in today’s episode of the podcast!

We are so pleased to welcome back Tyler Blanski, friend of the show, fellow Anne of Green Gables fan, and all-around delightful guy. Tyler is an author (if you haven’t read his conversion story, treat yourself), a husband and father, and the founder of the new apostolate Fight for Milk created to equip and encourage Catholic fatherhood.

In this episode we dive into our undying love for Anne and Gilbert, why Gilbert’s attitude toward marriage and fatherhood is so refreshing, and why so many parents (including us!) enter parenthood feeling so ill-equipped. Tyler is such a fun conversation partner and this episode is uplifting and a lot of fun.

So grab a cup of tea and enjoy the conversation!

Why House of Joppa?

“What’s in a name?” as Shakespeare so famously asked.  House of Joppa is rooted in scripture.

Acts 9:36-42 tells the story of a faithful disciple named Tabitha from Joppa who was known for her good works and helping the poor.  In a few short verses, Scripture tells us the miraculous story of how Tabitha died and was raised to life again by St. Peter.  The story spread throughout the region and “many believed in the Lord.”

House of Joppa is designed to inspire you to live your faith boldly in a world in such desperate need of beauty and that by doing so, many will come to believe in our Lord!

About Our Products

Every House of Joppa product is curated from artisans throughout the world, many of whom share our Catholic faith. They make wonderful gifts for special occasions or to simply raise the spirits of a friend who needs a little reminder of their faith.

FoC 153: Through the Wilderness to Conversion with Meg Tietz

As we prepare for Holy Week, we thought it was just the right time to be inspired by a conversion story. And since we’ve been itching to have our friend Meg Tietz on the show for ages, we asked if she could share her family’s beautiful story of conversion for you this week!

Meg is the creator and host of Sorta Awesome, a weekly lifestyle podcast for women. She loves to geek out over pop culture, personality types, and discovering all things awesome. A devoted fan of the rosary, she and her husband Kyle also created the Rosary Together podcast to encourage deeper devotion to prayer. They live in Oklahoma City with their five children which includes teens, twins, and a toddler.

We’ve been following Meg since the dark ages of blogging (remember blogs?) and have loved seeing her sparkle as the host of a popular podcast. Following her family’s journey to the Church has also been so exciting!

In this episode Meg shares about the winding road that led her into the Church. From growing up as a Protestant and then spending several difficult years in the wilderness of faith before she and her husband Kyle entered the Church, Meg’s story is so beautiful. It’s always so inspiring to hear about a conversion because God calls each person in a special way and no two conversion stories are exactly alike! If you’re wanting an episode that will make you think and inspire you as we get near to Easter, this one’s for you!

So grab a cup of tea and enjoy the conversation!

FoC 151: Finding New Life Through Momento Mori with Sister Theresa Aletheia Noble

In our six years of podcasting we have never had a religious sister as a guest! So this episode with Sr. Theresa Aletheia Noble is long overdue. She has an incredible conversion story from atheism and then she was surprised to discern a call to religious life and was led to the Daughters of St. Paul. It’s a beautiful and moving story and we can’t wait for you to hear it!

Sister is the founder of the Memento Mori project and the author of The Prodigal You Love and the Memento Mori Lenten Devotional. She resides in Boston and serves at the Pauline Publishing House in the editorial department. She’s also well known on Twitter for being the nun who keeps a skull on her desk to remind her of her mortality!

In this episode we dive into the very Lent-y subject of memento mori. Sister shares with us about how she was drawn to practice the contemplation of death and shares how we can all begin to do this so that we can prepare our hearts and live well rather than navigating the world in dread. This topic sounds heavy but we had so much fun talking with Sister and we know you’ll also be uplifted and inspired by her joy and love for Christ.

So grab a cup of tea and enjoy the conversation!

FoC 130: When Art Saves Our Faith: In the Past and Today with Elizabeth Lev

We have a treat for you today while we’re all waiting out this pandemic. We’re talking about beauty, art, and faith with Dr. Elizabeth Lev. Liz holds degrees in art history from the University of Chicago and the University of Bologna. She teaches art history at Duquesne University’s Italian campus and she has served as a commissioner on the Rome tourism board. She has also worked as a consultant on art and faith for the Vatican Museums and has led tours of the Eternal City for 20 years. Her TED Talk on the Sistine Chapel has garnered over 1.7 million views!

In this episode we’re focusing on Liz’s book How Catholic Art Saved the Faith. We talk about what was really happening during the Counter-Reformation and why we should call it the Catholic Restoration period instead. We discuss how artists worked with theologians to communicate great truths of the faith through the beauty of their work and how artists cans till do this today. We think that a discussion about beauty and art will really lift your spirits and encourage you to fill your space with art that challenges you! FoC 122: The Reed of God: Embracing the Dark Secret of Advent

It’s Advent! Since we’ve already released episodes about Advent music and how we observe Advent in our homes, we decided to talk about the spiritual journey of Advent inspired by one of our favorite books of all time, The Reed of God by 20th century British Catholic and spiritual writer, Caryll Houselander.

We’re sharing in this episode about the essential role of Mary as the model for Christians and how we can be inspired to faithfulness and holiness through her example in a special way during Advent. We talk about the reality of Advent as a time of “darkness” when the work God is doing to redeem us might be done secretly and quietly in our souls as Christ grew in Mary’s womb–not yet revealed. We also discuss the difficulty in trusting God that He will complete the work He is doing in our lives instead of reaching for spiritual perfectionism that insists we can become holy on our own just by trying harder. Houselander has so many incredible insights in this book and we’re excited to share some of her beautiful thoughts on Advent in this episode!

FoC 109: The Busy Gal’s Guide to Walking Through Holy Week

It’s Holy Week and we’re here to talk about how we do it. Now that we’ve all survived Palm Sunday Mass (AKA “stop poking your sibling with that palm during the LONG reading of the Passion, the palm is NOT a sword”) it’s time to really dive into this week that prepares us for Easter.

We recorded this episode before the Notre Dame fire and, to be honest, we’re both still reeling from that loss. If you’re grieving over it, too, we hope you find some joy in this episode and inspiration for walking with Our Lord in this holy time.

In this episode we talk about what Holy Week looks like at our houses. With 9 kids between us our homes are hardly filled with monastic silence, but the week does feel set apart. We share all about what Masses we try to attend, how to set a tone of somber reflection even with lots of kids, how we do Good Friday fasting for kids, whether we brave the Easter Vigil, special Easter traditions and more! So grab a cup of something penitential and listen in!

FoC 093: Becoming Saints in a Time of Crisis with Meg Hunter-Kilmer

Our summer break and Haley’s maternity leave is over! (And Baby Hildie is safely here after a wild arrival.) We have many great episodes planned for the fall but we wanted to first address the clerical abuse crisis in the Church. It’s a very difficult topic, so we knew we would need just the right person to discuss it with. Providentially, Meg Hunter-Kilmer was driving through Waco and gave an IN STUDIO interview (AKA Haley’s living room).

Meg is, in her words,  a “hobo missionary.” Trained in theology at Notre Dame, she travels all over the world as a Catholic speaker and evangelizer. She also podcasts and writes about the saints. In this conversation about the abuse crisis, we asked Meg about saints who lived during times of crisis in the Church and how we can emulate them in their commitment to speak difficult truths (even to the pope like St. Catherine of Siena did!) and their pursuit of holiness.

In today’s episode we discuss our responses to news about the crisis and ways to take action through practical means like letter writing and spiritual practices of prayer and fasting. We hope this episode will give you some hope in the midst of the heartbreak we are facing.

It’s just Christy and Haley on today’s episode before we take our summer break (as Haley stares down the last few days of her pregnancy!).  We chat about seasons or circumstances when we have felt helpless, how hard it is to know we’re not in control, and how experiencing helplessness can be good for us spiritually if we turn to God in our distress. We also share about how sacraments and sacramentals can comfort us and remind us of God’s love for us.

Then just for funsies we share what books and movies/shows we’ve been enjoying lately. So settle in, grab a cup of something COLD, and listen in!

FoC 088: Opening Your Heart to Life and Love Through Fostering with Annie Tillberg

We’ve had it on our hearts to do an episode on foster care and we realized that Annie Tillberg was the perfect guest to share on the topic! Annie and her husband Dan have an amazing story about fostering–both beautiful and heartwrenching. Annie is a blogger and the biological mother of two beautiful girls on earth (and a baby on the way!) and is currently fostering a sweet baby girl as well.

In this episode we talk about the calling that all women have to motherhood and how that calling is not always to biological motherhood but sometimes to spiritual motherhood, adoption, or foster care. You will learn so much about the practical side of how foster parenting works and the goals of foster care (hint: it’s not typically to adopt the child in your care) as well as the discernment process that the Tillbergs went through in their journey of choosing to become foster parents. We also touch on the sacrificial nature of foster parenting and how it can be a living out of the pro-life message. So grab a cup of tea (and maybe a box of kleenex) and enjoy the conversation!
